Motivation Monday at #STC12 Creativity is Work!
Motivation Monday at #STC12 Creativity is Work! Creativity, innovation, new ideasGot em? They are not as elusive as we may think, at least according to Scott Berkun. He delivered the keynote at the Society for Technical Communication 2012 Conference last night. As a job seeker, you need to be a bit more creative in your job search, right? As an employee, you may want/need to develop more good ideas! Here are some things to think about. What Kills the Idea? Innovation and creativity are two skills said to be in demand in todays fast moving work environment. So how do you build up those skills? Berkun said that creativity is work. It isnt just the epiphany, but the dedication to followup on the idea once its been conceived. This is where most people give up (due to many reasons, most rooted in fear). FEARdid you hear that? Job seekers and employees should deal with their fears! Youre Using the WRONG language Another point Berkun made was that those well-meaning leaders (or others) who try to spark the fire of creativity do the exact opposite when they use jargon or words that are too complex to really understand. Here is Berkuns slide (as shared by @afox98) Now, to put this in terms for job seekers. You use jargon as you write and talk about yourself and you know whatit usually doesnt work. You are much better off dropping the jargon and using words that truly describe what you are a talking about. Have a PITCH According to Berkun, everyone needs to be able to pitch their ideas! Lack of courage prevents many from doing this. But, he says there are some things you should think about as you pitch. Make it short! That means, succinctly tell what problem your idea solves! Pitch it often! Pitch it to as many people as possible Have someone catch it! Identify someone who will listen to your pitch and pull them aside to gain advocacy. Tell a story! Include a story with your pitch as an example of the problems it has solved in the past. Or the problems that have needed this solution in the past. Job seekers, do you see how this relates to your situation? I could go on and on about the motivating and inspiring points Scott Berkun made. He got me thinking and most of the audience as well. In a few hours, Ben Woelk and I will be co-presenting Bullet Proofing Your Career Online at the 2012 STC Conference in Rosemont, IL (thats technically Chicago). I have now added this to my reading list: The Myths of Innovation. As you begin this week, what new ideas will you work on? How will you eliminate jargon?

Tough (Question) Tuesday What do you kick scream to do, but always ends up making you feel good - When I Grow Up
Tough (Question) Tuesday What do you kick scream to do, but always ends up making you feel good - When I Grow Up Feels Good to get Some Stuff Done by Mary Kate McDevitt Isnt it so silly that were our own worst enemy 9 times outta 10? We *know* that we feel so limber and relaxed post-yoga, and our body feels so un-bloated and un-bleched after we eat that meat-free meal, but yet we kick and scream to get ourselves to class, or even pop in our yoga DVD, and the chickens already been defrosted What do you kick scream to do, but always ends up making you feel good? For me, its definitely exercise- and eating-based (although Ive gotten so much better at it!). But its also connected to how long Im working in front of the computer for not taking a break when I really need it, even though I know 30 minutes with my uke will clear my head, refresh me, and therefore make me more productive (silly Michelle)! Ooh, also, leaving the apartment when theres work to do and my netbooks broken (a new ones on its way, but its been too long without a portable work machine!), thats another one. Its like Im a prisoner in my own home because I cant work outside, so I shouldnt go outside. Meanwhile, a 15 minute walk is usually just what the doctor ordered! Wondering how much our answers differ from each other, I asked my twitter followers to chime on in: (Click on their answers to be taken to their twitter pages!) What do you kick scream to do, but always ends up making you feel good? Is it the same as anything mentioned here, or does it consist of something(s) different? Cant wait to read about it in the comments!

How To Robot-Proof Your Job
How To Robot-Proof Your Job If you find it hard to imagine that a robot could some day take your job, you should probably try imagining harder. A new survey finds that one in five companies has replaced workers with automation â" and not just in low-wage jobs. While 21% of companies overall say that they now use technology instead of humans for some jobs, the number is even higher â" 30% â" at businesses with more than 500 workers, according to a nationwide survey out today by CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI). And that trend is only expected to accelerate: According to the report, one-third of employers predict that jobs at their firms that are currently performed by humans will come to be performed by machines in the next decade. âThis has been a threat for a long time and there are many industries that need a lot less people to do the same jobs more efficiently or for less cost,â says Janet Elkin, CEO of Supplemental Healthcare, a company that recruits staff for healthcare organizations. Interestingly â" some might say ironically â" working in a cutting-edge industry doesnât necessarily protect you from this dynamic. In fact, according to the study, workers at information technology firms are twice as likely to see their jobs replaced with automation. Employers in financial services and manufacturing rounded out the top three areas with the largest number of employers âdeskillingâ workers. Other industries or sectors that will see a big impact: Customer service, accounting, assembly, production, shipping, distribution, and sales. Several forces are at play. In many cases, technology has and continues to eliminate the need for workers who facilitate transactions by enabling customers to perform those transactions themselves. Think travel agents, customer service reps, and even store clerks. You see it directly if you do self-check out at your grocery store or have eaten at a Panera Bread restaurant that has replaced cashiers with kiosks. Itâs not just affecting lower wage jobs, however. Powerful software is taking on professional and white-collar jobs in accounting, finance, and even paralegal work. âWhen I talk to my favorite geeks in Silicon Valley,â said Andrew McAfee, principal research scientist at MITâs Center for Digital Business, in a May interview in New Scientist, âthey look around and say, man, the work of a financial adviser, a junior analyst at an asset management firm, a pathologist, a hamburger flipper, I can automate that.â Still, though technology taketh away, it can also giveth. Nearly 70% of companies that have replaced workers with automation say the new technology has also required the creation of new positions in their firms, according to the CareerBuilder survey. And 35% of companies that eliminated jobs with technology said they ended up creating more jobs in their firms than they had before automation. âWhile automation may eliminate some jobs, it also creates other jobs that are higher paying,â says Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder and co-author of The Talent Equation. âOne of the greatest challenges the U.S. faces today is sufficiently preparing the workforce for the influx of knowledge-based jobs that will likely result from progress in robotics and other STEM-related fields.â So how do you put yourself in line for one of those new jobs? Donât wait for your current job to become obsolete. If you see an opportunity to make your job more efficient with technology, be the person to oversee the change and train people in how the new system works. âMake sure youâre the one who understands how it all works,â says Elkin.. Upgrade your skill set. If you have a job that you think a robot can easily replace, consider going back to school or investing in online courses that can help you gain valued expertise. You may need to explore alternative occupations and industries that are growing and where you can transfer your skill set, says CareerBuilderâs Jennifer Grasz. Pay attention to trends in your field. Is job growth in your business accelerating or decelerating? Is this related to an economic cycle or technology advancement? Research articles online on how your occupation is evolving and develop the skill sets needed to leverage new technologies. The survey did offer one positive sign for workers who have been replaced: It found that 35% of companies that eliminated jobs with automation hired people back because the technology didnât deliver as expected or customers wanted to interact with a live person. âTechnology is not perfect and things often go awry,âsays Elkin. âWhen that happens, you need a human to fix them.â

Power in Numbers How Women at Fidelity Are Helping One Another Succeed
Power in Numbers How Women at Fidelity Are Helping One Another Succeed Behind every successful woman, as the saying goes, is a tribe of other successful women who have her back. Its true. Womens success is multiplied when they have a group of women behind them who are willing to support, mentor, and promote them in and outside of the office. But where can you find a group of women who want to see you succeed who want to invest in your professional and personal growth, especially in an industry like finance? A strong womens employee resource group is a great distribution policy to start.Recently, the group collaborated with Fidelitys Personal Investing group to focus on the growing prominence of women investors. And when Fidelity launched a new fund that seeks to identify high-performing companies that prioritize and advance womens leadership and development, WLG raised awareness across the company about the importance of gender diversity in investing. This group is affecting positive change on a company level, Arlene, Vice President of External Communications at Fidelity Investments, said of the WLG. Theres power in numbers, and the collective voice and actions of women are making a meaningful impact on Fidelitys HR and business strategies. She notes that on top of providing a supportive environment and tangible business development, the many WLG committees provide the perfect opportunity for women to flex their leadership skills within the organization.Theres value in gaining and exercising leadership, negotiation, presentation or communication skills by serving on or leading a committee that differs from ones daily job responsibilities, she said. For example, when a member has a new idea for an event or program, she prepares and presents a proposal to the steering committee.Personally, Arlene says shes found the opportunity for impact provided by her involvement with Fidelitys WLG deeply fulfilling.Im very passionate about the personal and professional developm ent of others, and I have found that participating in employee resource groups gives me an opportunity to have an impact on a broad scale, she said. I encourage all employees to get involved in an employee resource group that resonates with them personally, and if your company doesnt have one, then start one. Employee resource groups are both personally and professionally rewarding. These kinds of networks, Arlene added, are also a great space in which to foster allyship. One of the WLGs main priorities right now is engaging male allies across Fidelitys employee resource groups, and ensuring everyone is part of creating an innovative, supportive environment. If youre looking for that tribe of supportive people who want you (and the business) to succeed, you can find it at Fidelity.--Fairygodboss is proud to partner with Fidelity Investments.
